The IELTS Speaking Test has been designed to assess the skills in the candidate’s ability to communicate effectively in English. While there are three components of speaking vocabulary, grammar, fluency and coherence, the pronunciation is also an integral part of the speaking module that also counts toward the final band score. Students often focus on learning more advanced words and phrases and the more complex sentence structures, but ignore their pronunciation. But, even a candidate having great language skills may not be able to communicate due to poor pronunciation, which will impact the candidate’s overall performance in the examination.

The British, American and Australian accents are not what is referred to as pronunciation. In the first one, the IELTS Speaking Test’s first goal is to determine that the examiner is able to comprehend the candidate without any difficulties. Clear pronunciation will help convey ideas clearly, and will help the person interviewing you to make a good impression. It is essential for them to practice pronunciation along with their vocabulary and grammar at an IELTS Institute, so that they can learn them correctly. Students studying coaching institutes, preparing for the exam can be heard as they have a common interest in studying pronunciation and getting better at it in order to speak well in their exams.

Role Pronunciation in the IELTS Speaking Test

  • Make double consonant sounds

The foremost role of pronunciation is to communicate clearly. The Speaking Test for IELTS aims to assess the candidates’ ability to speak confidently and be understood. If the words are mispronounced, the examiner may not be able to comprehend the meaning of the word. This can cause a break in natural facilities and can impact the candidate’s score. Candidates who practise and have good pronunciation will be able to communicate clearly and effectively without repetition and correction. Simple words can have a strong impact when they are voiced with a strong voice and have a firm command of pronunciation. So, the candidates should pay attention to correctly pronouncing frequently used words of the English language.

  • The enhancements in pronunciation

There is a close relationship between the concepts of Fluency and Pronunciation. When candidates can be certain about the pronunciation of words, they will be more likely to be able to say them more naturally and fluently. However, if the children are not consistent enough in their pronunciation, self-correction, hesitation and pauses may result. Students’ pronunciation work will enable them to become more familiar with spoken English. As they get more comfortable with this, they can express their thoughts and ideas more clearly and fluently, and will be able to speak at a more standard cadence. The teachers of a PTE Institute tell their students to listen to native speakers, practice the correct pronunciation of words and speak a lot to become more fluent.

  • Pronunciation is a factor affecting the IELTS Band Score

The four criteria or tasks in the Speaking Test of the IELTS test are assessed by students’ responses, with pronunciation being one of them. The ease of comprehension of the candidate is assessed by the examiner during the whole conversation. Word stress, sentence stress, intonation, rhythm and sound clarity are all factors for the pronunciation mark.

The candidates need not be fluent in the language to get a high band score. Instead, they should focus on clearly saying their words, on how they say them, as well as intonation patterns and avoid making mistakes that affect pronunciation. Speaking practice with regular pronunciation drills can lead to more fluency in speech and to more band points.

Use of appropriate intonation patterns helps speech to be more natural. In tonology, the term intonation denotes the changes in the pitch of the voice in speech. Can be used to express emotions, emphasise the main ideas and add natural soundness to conversations. The candidates who adopt the right intonation rate while speaking during the speaking test make the test appear to be more confident and engaging.

If a speaker continuously uses the same tone of voice in the speech, he or she may not be an effective speaker. They can familiarize themselves with natural English speech by engaging in English conversations. Students can practise their English with natural language through conversing in English, listening to English language materials and reading English podcasts. It is important for the exam takers to learn to express themselves, and this is one of the reasons why listening and speaking exercises with expression and intonation are often included in the IELTS Institute.

  • Speaks confidently in the Test

Confidence has a vital role in terms of IELTS Speaking achievement. No one will be nervous if a candidate is sure about their pronunciation. They don’t need to say the words well, they can work on elaborating on their responses. Confidence also can make them contribute well in discussions, and provide comprehensive responses to questions. This can be slowly worked on with regular practice and feedback from instructors and recording individual reaction. As candidates start to get the pronunciation right, they feel more inclined to converse with others in English, both in class and outside. If you are studying at Best PTE Institute, then pronunciation is something which can be learned by practicing continuously and persevering at it.

Summing Up

‘Saying the words right’ in the IELTS Speaking Test is not enough to be considered correct pronunciation and it is vital for effective communication. Pronunciation helps candidates to express ideas with confidence, it is a component of fluency, helps listeners to understand what candidates are saying and directly impacts on candidates’ band scores. While vocabulary and grammar may be important, it is only when there is understandable speech that this is useful. Students take one step forward in improving their communication skills with each conversation, listening and speaking activity. Remember: It is not the accent which is the only thing that is important in the IELTS Speaking Test, it is being understood clearly and confidently. Then, pronunciation will be a strength and a higher band score will be much easier to achieve.
